The Cool Big Sister of Shanghai: A Conversation with Ting Ting Liang

Born in Den Ham, a small village in the Netherlands, Ting Ting Liang was practically raised in the kitchen. Her parents worked in and owned several eateries when she was growing up, and Liang, 31, says of the industry: “It kind of stays in your blood.” When Liang, a queer woman, moved to Shanghai in 2011 for an internship, she was taken aback by the lack of establishments and events geared toward the local lesbian and bisexual women population. After working in a metal bar for several years, she sensed an opportunity to create a place for women like her. In early 2015 she took the plunge and opened Roxie — currently the only lesbian bar in Shanghai.
