Brown (and) A Broad

I’m a Mexico-based solo female travel expert, magazine editor and content creator, who prefers getting to know a destination via slow travel, rather than more fast-pace, on-the-go tourism.

I inspire and help women build the skills and confidence to move abroad and create the remote life they’ve always dreamed of.

A Few of My Favorite Coffeeshops in Merida Mexico

A Few of My Favorite Coffeeshops in Merida Mexico

As a writer, coffeeshops have a way of becoming your defacto office. Working remotely means I’m often by myself, which I love most of the time, but sometimes, I crave a bit of outside noise in the background to break up the monotony of my work-from-home life. Merida has no shortage of coffeeshops, that’s for sure. But, I haven’t been exactly blown away by many of the options. If I’m being honest it feels like a “peanut butter, no jelly” situations sometimes.

It’s like I’m often choosing between the café with great coffee and so-so food, or the one with good food and so-so coffee, or good coffee and food but no a.c. I’m a woman, so my grievances could go on and on, but that’s not the point of this post.

Here’s a list of six coffeeshops I like to work from in Merida.

 Voltacafe

I love this place for the quality, fresh, and tasty ingredients and dishes. There are two locations, one in Centro, and another one in the Altrabisa neighborhood. I prefer the latter, they have ample indoor and outdoor seating, and despite being a popular destination, they never seem too packed. My favorite things to order are the dirty chai latte and the chilaquiles divorciados.

 LatteJus

Located in the North of the city, there’s a few places to sit inside LatteJus  but it’s small, and probably better suited for a quick drink and chat with a friend instead of a sprawled out work session. The interior features vibrant colors. I had a coffee that was perfectly okay alongside some really cheesy, sourdough molletes. The real stars however are the keto desserts.

I took a cupcake home and OMG, was it rich, moist, and had just the right amount of sweetness.

 Marago Coffee

Located in Centro, Marago’s tagline is Special Coffee & Great Food. Do with that what you will. Their coffee is really good, and besides regular bebidas like lattes and mochas, you can get your coffee a variety of ways. French press, chemex, V60, are just a few vessels through which to get your caffeine fix.

 Dalia Café

Located in the same plaza as LatteJus…they got food and coffee too! For real though, it’s gorgeous in here. Very feminine with the perfect backdrops for a coffee and selfie session.

 El Apapacho

So this is what healthy taste like?

Located in Centro, this restaurant and café also moonlights as a feminist bookstore and art gallery. Most of the sitting space is outside, so be ready for that, though there are a few fans to keep you from melting. El Apapacho specializes in gourmet Mexican food, organic coffee, and has vegan and vegetarian options. They have regular coffee drink as well as non-standard drinks like turmeric lattes.

Y’all, this might be the new spot. It has all the components of a great cafe. Beautiful, minimal & modern decoration, delicious food and coffee, and melodic, not-too-loud music in the background. There’s an outside courtyard, and multiple rooms to sit and work in if it’s too hot to dine outside (often the case in Merida.) Me encantas!
